The 1909 guidebook simply mentions this about Sasto...”We touch Sasto that is always rich in water, and in wild ducks, on the side of which deer graze at night”. It got its name from a pond that is overgrown with sedge. The 1969 issue of the Matra guidebook was the first to deal with it as a tourist center. Its premise is that Varga Ferenc, the then council chairman created the pond in 1953 on a flat area. The Sasto campground was developed in 1961 as the first highland campground. They brought the 50 meter tall look out tower from Algyor, which is located next to Szeged, where it operated as an oil-rig.
